My Story

In March of 1997,  I was arrested for aggravated robbery, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and menacing.  I was charged as an adult and that is when my life changed forever!

Facing 16 to 48 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections, I accepted a plea bargain to serve 5 years in the Youthful Offender System.

Five years post-incarceration I earned my Bachelor of Arts in "Human Performance and Sport with an Emphasis in Athletic Training", from Metropolitan State College of Denver.  Following undergrad, I earned my Master of Arts in "Kinesiology with an Emphasis in Athletic Training", from Fresno Pacific University.  Hungry for more education I embarked on a journey to earn my doctorate degree.  In spring of 2014, I earned my Doctorate in Health Sciences (D.H.Sc.) from A.T. Still University in "Leadership and Organizational Behavior".

In 2017 the governor granted me a pardon as a result of my commitment to turn my life around.  I earned my life back and now my past is truly behind me.  When you invest in yourself and put in the work nothing can stop you!

Cheryl Maes

I had the pleasure of meeting Wayne Thomas over 20 years ago when he was a young man who was incarcerated in the Youthful Offender System.  Mr. Thomas had made some poor decisions and really had no direction in his life.  Through cognitive re-direction and education Mr.Thomas choose not to let his past dictate his future.  He took advantage of all the opportunities that the Youthful Offender System provided and thus has become a very successful and productive member of society. It is very rewarding as a staff member who worked directly with Mr. Thomas to see that the efforts put into him have paid off.  Mr. Thomas currently has a D.HSc in Leadership and Organizational Behavior and is living the dream as a father and productive citizen in the community.
